Miscellaneous Information
The five surviving crew all became PoW |
John was born at Leamington, Ontario on 28 September 1921. Both parents were born in England and his father worked as a Relief Officer. He had a sister Elsie Louise. He went to Mill Street Public School 1926-1935 followed by Leamington High, 1935-1937. The sports he took part in were skating, baseball, swimming, and he also enjoyed dancing. He worked for J.W. Bateman at the Meat Market, Leamington, 1936-1942, where he was a butcher, butcher’s clerk. He could drive a car, a motor cycle and a truck. |
After enlisting on 21 April 1942 and initial training, John was posted to the U.K. and embarked from Canada on 24 November 1943. On arrival at 3PRC on 2 December 1943 he went on to 6(P) AFU 11 January 1944, 24 OTU 22 February 1944 and 431 Squadron 20 June 1944. Sadly John was to lose his life on 29 July 1944. |

Operation | Hamburg. 307 aircraft. German night-fighters appeared on the return leg leading to 22 losses (7.2%). This was the first raid on Hamburg for a year and was not well concentrated. The Germans were unable to determine the aiming point from the bombing results. Most of the bombs fell on areas devastated during 1943. |
